When the obvious translation isn’t right

The topic of false friends comes up regularly in translation, and this week’s collection of translation glitches are similar but perhaps better described as “friends that might lead you astray”. All the examples we discuss here have what… Read More

Rosetta Translation offers fast and professional audio transcription services; converting a spoken language source into the written form. Upon listening to your recording, we will appoint transcribers specializing in the required subject matter to type out word-for-word what is being spoken. We can also subsequently translate your transcript.

Good quality sound files enable the best transcription possible. Electronic files are preferred since they provide the quickest and easiest formats to work with and can be uploaded securely to our website. Alternatively, Rosetta Translation can also offer a transcription service for the following formats: mini, micro and standard cassettes, mini discs, CDs and DVDs. Please note that if sending recordings through the post we do recommend that you use either Special or Recorded Delivery in order that you can track delivery.

Top Quality Transcription Services

All Rosetta transcriptions undergo a two-stage process. Each recording is transcribed by an experienced transcriber and then checked by a second linguist for accuracy and completeness. Should any words, phrases or spelling be unclear, these will be [placed within square brackets], indicating that this requires verification by the client.

Your completed transcripts will then be returned via email, CD or hard copy within the agreed deadline and in accordance with your instructions. For example, you may choose at the start whether you wish to have a verbatim or standard transcription.

For an additional charge, time coding may also be inserted to indicate each change of speaker.

Many factors can affect the time taken to transcribe recordings. Prices will be quoted for each individual project and will depend upon content, number of speakers, rate of speech, whether any layering of speech is present, accents, background noise and quality of audio recording. We reserve the right to review our quotation should this differ dramatically from the information provided, or should the recording be unclear.

Why might I need transcription?

At Rosetta Translation, our clients require our transcription services for a myriad of reasons. The large majority need transcription services in order to use them for subtitles. Additionally, they may need to have a foreign language transcribed in order for it to also be translated, which is another service we offer. You may also need transcription services to get the gist of a conversation, or to make a record of it. Whatever your reason for needing transcription services is, we at Rosetta translation are well equipped to help you and provide the best service for your project.

What kind of transcription style do I need?

If you are considering having a project transcribed, there are a few things you will need to decide on. One of those will be what kind of style it is that you require that will best suit your needs. The four main styles of transcription are verbatim transcription, clean verbatim transcription, intelligent verbatim transcription and phonetic transcription. The latter is the least frequently used transcription style as it’s uses are very limited, and would be mainly used where accent or linguistic studies were concerned as the exact phonetic sounds uttered by the speaker are recorded. The first and second styles, verbatim and clean verbatim, are by far the most common. This is where all words uttered by the speaker are recorded, or where any “um”s and “aah”s are omitted to make it “cleaner”. These are the most common forms of transcription as they are what is expected when we see subtitles, for example, and what most people would expect from transcription services. Intelligent verbatim transcription is where the transcriber has a bit more creative licence on the content and can change sentence order and sentence structure to make the meaning even clearer for the reader. This can mean that the actual transcript would read more like a traditionally written piece, with expected punctuation and paragraphing, which isn’t necessarily natural to a speaking rhythm.

We at Rosetta Translation are able to provide a range of transcription styles with experienced transcribers, and can also have your transcriptions translated for you. Why not send us a quote request and get the ball rolling?

I have some audio and I am not sure what language it is; can you help?

At Rosetta Translation, we have often dealt with projects where our clients are not 100% sure on what the language is that they need to transcribe (or indeed, translate). In this case, we are of course able to help as our keen-eared account managers would be able to point you in the right direction. As mentioned before, we can transcribe languages other than English and have those translated for you also.

Can’t I just use voice recognition software instead of an actual human?

Big companies now are more and more producing tools that can recognise speech and produce a transcription for you, be that helping you compose an email or even reply to a text while you are driving. With this, oftentimes you will need to repeat yourself, or be explicit on punctuation marks (like having to say “full stop” when you want one, and hopefully actually getting one, instead of the words “full stop”…). This is often not a luxury you have if you have a video or audio file that needs transcribing. This is why although those tools can be useful for some applications, for transcription for the most common jobs, say for subtitling audio or recording a conversation, it is always best to work with an experienced transcriber who can produce a great transcription for you that is fit for purpose.
