British Sign Language Interpreting

British Sign Language (BSL) is the sign language used in the United Kingdom by deaf people, their relatives, sign language interpreters and others who regularly come into contact with members of the British deaf community. There are an estimated 125,000 deaf adults in the UK who use BSL, as well as around 20,000 children. The total number of BSL users in the UK, including non-deaf individuals, is around 250,000.

BSL interpreting involves a trained professional interpreting spoken/written English into BSL, on the one hand, and also providing a high quality English translation of BSL, on the other. This ensures that all parties can communicate clearly and effectively.

Signed Supported English Interpreting

All of our interpreters are able to adapt their BSL skills to meet the needs of anyone requiring Signed Supported English interpreting.

This variant is suitable for deaf people who have a better grasp of English, and who prefer to have a literal, word-for-word interpretation of what the speaker says, using signs that follow the structure of the English more closely.

Lip-speaking

This service does not use sign language as such, but is an additional service that we provide for deaf individuals who prefer to lip read. We only use professionals who are trained to interpet for the deaf and hard of hearing for this service, which involves a dialogue being repeated by the interpreter using clear lip patterns that are easy for deaf individuals to read.

Accredited Sign Language Interpreting Agency

Rosetta is one of only very few translation and interpreting agencies who have achieved both the prestigious ISO 9001:2008 certification as well as the DIN EN 15038 norm, the only certification that specifically relates to translation and interpreting services. Our customers can therefore be completely assured of the consistently high quality of our interpreting services.

For those interested to find out more about sign languages, there is a lot of information put out in relation to the annual International Day of Sign Languages, which was initiated by the United Nations in 2017 and is celebrated on 23 September..
