English as a target language

Whether your translation assignment is complex and technical or more basic in style, Rosetta Translation always has experienced translators on hand to deliver, with expertise in a number of areas, from technical computer jargon to pharmaceutical industry terminology.

As an internationally aware company, we operate as worldwide a service for our English translation as we do for our other languages. This means that we can provide English in any of the many existing dialects, whether you need British English, American English, Australian English, or perhaps New Zealand English, we have the know-how and the expertise.

How can I be sure my English translation conveys what I need it to?

English is a wonderfully complex and expressive language, and often voted the hardest European language for non-speakers to learn, so understandably a common worry when you are needing a translation is wondering if your source language is faithfully and accurately conveyed into English. With its roots as a West Germanic language originating from Anglo-Frisian dialects, English as we know it today has developed over the course of 1400 years which has contributed to its complexity.

Sometimes translations need to be concise and convey the meaning of the source text with no ambiguity, such as with birth certificates, product specification sheets or contracts, as these are key characteristics of the texts.

However, the direct style you would adopt for a translation of the above would not be suitable for other texts, such as literature, non-fiction or marketing, which requires finesse and a respect of the tone and style. You would not want your idioms for example being translated literally to where your target audience loses the meaning. Imagine you’re creating a dynamic and humorous advert, using the witty French idiom of “les carottes sont cuites!” as the punchline… The meaning behind this French phrase is something akin to “no use crying over spilt milk” but literally translated means “the carrots are cooked!” Now it’s easy to see the many pitfalls our translators skilfully navigate on every project they work on so you can be confident in your translation landing as the source text intended.

Therefore, Rosetta Translation always ensures your translation goes to the appropriate specialist that is well versed in respecting the expected style required for your texts, ensuring that your translations always hit the mark.

Why translate into English?

Through the influence of the British Empire and its spread to the United States, English has become the most spoken language in the world as we know it today.

English is therefore widely learnt as a second language with more people who have learnt it as a second language than native speakers around the world. This is due in part to being the common official language of former territories of the British Empire, called “Sovereign states”, meaning the influence of the English language reaches far outside the western world.

Therefore, translating your documents into English means opening up your reach to a world stage, making it accessible to the largest readership in the world. English is therefore the chosen working language of many leading professional fields; it’s estimated that 98% of all scientific publications are written in the English language and therefore it’s the chosen language of research and collaboration. Entrusting your translation to experienced professionals who you can have confidence in being able to convey your meaning is therefore a natural part of what we do here at Rosetta Translation.

How do I know what variety of English translation would be the most appropriate for me?

It’s important to make sure your English translation is appropriate for your audience so as to avoid, at the least, a technical term that misses the mark, or worse, having a translation that means the opposite of what you intended, or even causing offence. Therefore, it’s important to recognise that English has a large number of dialects that mean that not only is the pronunciation of them different, but more importantly for translation, they can have very distinct grammar patterns and vocabulary. Dialects include US English, Australian English, Indian English and Jamaican English; but this list is by no means exhaustive as many sovereign states have their own dialects, influenced by native languages and cultures mixing with colonial and modern English. What you don’t want is your readership thinking what you’re referring to as an innocent pair of footwear is actually a rather saucy piece of intimate clothing… (“thong” in Australian English compared to UK English).

Identifying where your translation will be used is a process that we at Rosetta Translation will do as part of our quoting stage, so you can be confident that your text will always read seamlessly to your intended audience.
